As you can imagine, some of the most popular distractions in a parking lot involve your phone. From programming your GPS to switching the radio station… it’s common for distractions to occur. Keep in mind, most states prohibit the use of phones while driving for good reason. Always pay close attention to your surroundings when operating a vehicle in a parking lot.

These days it’s becoming more and more common to find handy gadgets in your vehicle such as backup cameras. These are fantastic options to utilize for safety. Did you know most parking lot collisions occur while your car is in reverse? Using your backup camera will help you to see people and objects in your blind spot more efficiently. Use the technology your vehicle allows to back up more car with more confidence.

Keep Doors Locked

Keeping your doors locked is a very easy way to help deter criminals. They may simply be on the lookout for an unlocked door, which makes things all too easy. Hiding your store purchases out of plain view will also help deter criminal activity. Never leave your purse, credit cards, or other valuable items in your car.

Try to look for a parking space that’s close to your destination, especially if you’re planning to leave your vehicle there once it’s dark. Parking close by to crowded areas in spots with ample light will help to keep you safe.

Drive Cautiously

Driving with caution is most important in parking lots. You’ll always want to travel at a slow rate of speed, obeying signs and anticipating the movement of other drivers and pedestrians. In crowded areas, be sure to constantly scan the location of nearby people and vehicles. It’s your responsibility to stay in the lanes, follow arrows, and take all of the necessary precautions.
